After hearing the news, Lauren’s boss told him, “The world isn’t ready for Ralph Lauren.” Today, with over $4 billion in revenue, Lauren has taken the fashion world by storm. But his newfound fortune is a long way from where Lauren started off, he hopes that his Polo collection will be remembered for some time to come. he managed to become one of the best-selling American designers of all time.
Lauren’s handmade neckties were flying off the shelves, It was a conservative time in the fashion world and Lauren’s . He knew that if he was going to stick around in the business for much longer, he had to do something and fast with a help of a $50,000 loan, Lauren founded Polo Fashions, he chose the name not because he liked the sport, cause he had never played polo before in his life. In 1971 his store opened to the public and became an instant hit ,he continued to expand his line, especially for women, to whom he gave clothes made of cashmere, cotton, and tweed.
“There is a way of living that has a certain grace and beauty, It is not a constant race for what is next, rather, an appreciation of that which has come before.” says Lauren.
1- Excitement:
Lauren did not just take chances with his clothes, although his pleated trousers and tweed jackets for women did that too ,he wanted to make everything about his brand exciting and comfortable form the way he clothes fell on the body to the way they were presented in stores . Lauren knew that if his brand was going to be remembered, he had to give customers an experience they would not soon forget.
2- Grit:
Lauren mother was disappointed in him for not being a rabbi Bloomingdales rejected him for being too daring in his designs but Lauren did care and followed his passion, and designed how he wanted to design. That was how he made a name for himself.
3- Consistency:
“What matters the most to me are clothes that are consistent and accessible, I believe in clothes that last, that are not dated in a season the people who wear my clothes don't think of them as fashion.” Says Lauren . In the hopes of building a lasting brand, Lauren focused on creating clothes that were exciting, stylish, and consistent all in one.
4-Sensibility:
Lauren made sure to listen to what people think about his fashions tastes and trends especially young people they were his best customer, didn't want to lose the them or others .
5- Discipline:
Without experience and degree , he knew he had to work twice as hard as others dose the achieve success , by going to business school at night and working retail during the day, Lauren acquired a unique skill set that helped propel him to the top.
6- Do not try to please everyone all the time:
“Your vision is very important. You should know whom you’re selling to, what your marketing and advertising says about you, and whom it’s speaking to, Me personally don’t try to please everyone. I understand who I am selling to and I work towards that vision all the time. ,” says Lauren.
There are some people you can never please, Lauren has learned, and it is not worth his effort to try. Doing so would not only make him unhappy, but it would cost him time and energy on the path to achieving his own goals . Today, Lauren continues to be his own best customer, and is not afraid to let everyone know it. “I’m totally involved with all of my products,” he says.
